The photocard driving licence explained

All driving licences issued by Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA) are now issued in European union format - a plastic photocard and a paper counterpart. Old format mode licences are still valid and will exist updated gradually every bit they are renewed and replaced.

Changes made to the format of Great United kingdom of great britain and northern ireland driving licences effective from eight June 2015, have no effect  on licences issued past the Driver & Vehicle Agency in NI. Northern Republic of ireland licences keep to be composed of 2 parts, a plastic photocard and a newspaper counterpart

Photocard licences

Photocard licences were introduced every bit a result of an EU directive requiring all member states to event driving licences in a card format which contains the licence holder's image and signature. In that location are many benefits that photocard driving licences offer, including:

  • allowing member country licence holders liberty to move effectually many European countries
  • a more than secure format which reduces the opportunity for misrepresentation
  • ensuring that the person obtaining a conditional licence, taking the test and obtaining a total driving licence is one and the aforementioned
  • a cut in impersonation at driving tests
  • ensuring that the person obtaining the licence is old enough to do so
  • minimising the chances of a person property more than i licence, either by accident or blueprint
